Post-doc position in Monitoring and characterizing Hydromorphology at the reach scale by emerging Remote Sensing technologies (within MONHYSENSE project)

at the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Warsaw University of Life Sciences, Poland.  


Project job description:

The main objective of the MONHYSENSE project is to develop an appropriate operational methodology using novel Remote Sensing (RS) technologies to monitor and characterize the Hydromorphological (HYMO) status of different river systems, with a special focus on the reach scale. More specifically, the project aims to determine the potentials of emerging Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) technologies, in particular UAV-LiDAR and UAV-Hyperspectral sensors, in respect to airborne platforms to monitor some of the HYMO indicators identified as important at the reach scale by the FP7-REFORM project.


-Taking part in several fieldwork missions, participating in the acquisition of data through UAV systems, equipped with some of the most advanced sensors available in the market (Velodyne LiDAR and Rikola-Hyperspectral), in collaboration with other teams of experts (e.g. botanists).

-Processing and analyzing of RS data with machine learning techniques in strong collaboration with a PhD student, for the mapping and characterizing of riparian and aquatic HYMO indicators.

-Analyzing the RS-data in collaboration with a team of fluvial geomorphologists experts, with the aim of exploiting RS-based information for HYMO characterization purposes.

-Publishing results in international peer-reviewed journals and participating in conferences.

Required skills and experiences:

Highly motivated researchers with a PhD in remote sensing, physical geography, environmental engineering, informatics, machine learning, fluvial geomorphology or similar are strongly encouraged to apply. All candidates should have a solid understanding and knowledge of RS image processing (especially on LiDAR/Hypersp. data) and of machine learning/data mining techniques. High level of spoken and written English is required. Preferred skills: self-organization, proactive, diving license, capability to work independently and within a team with high a sense of responsibility.
