Excellent news is coming from Stanford University in California. Under the leadership of Professor John Ioannidis, a study on scientific citations has been published, ranking about 230,000 of the most cited scientists in the world across all disciplines, encompassing the top 2% of the most influential researchers in each scientific field. The list includes a total of 129 Croatian scientists, among whom are two members of the Faculty of Geodesy – Dr. Bojan Vršnak and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mateo Gašparović.
The study’s data are based on the Scopus database. The authors of the study emphasize that citation metrics are often used and misused, which is why this database provides standardized information on citations. Scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields according to the Science-Metrix classification. The new updated list was compiled using a Scopus data extract dated August 1, 2025.
